When is trance good or bad?

I would like to know what criteria we use to decide if trace is a good or bad?

Does it have to do with how well it fits into our lives at the time, that is, does it serve us in some way to go into a trance?

Or, are there times when, even though it may be uncomfortable or troublesome to go into a trance, is it still good for us in some way?
