A Poem for Spring

A light breather

The spirit moves,
Yet stays:
Stirs as a blossom stirs,
Still wet from its bud-sheath,
Slowly unfolding,
Turning in the light with its tendrils;
Plays as a minnow plays,
tethered to a limp weed, swinging,
Tail around, nosing in and out of the current,
Its shadow loose, a watery finger;
Moves, like the snail,
Still inward,
Taking and embracing its surroundings,
Never wishing itself away,
Unafraid of what it is,
A music in a hood,
A small thing,
Singing.

- Theodore Roethke

Join Matthew [3] and Patrick Marsolek [3] in a dynamic exploration of what it means
to be conscious and embodied on this living earth.

Together we will cultivate healthy, integrated practices for staying connected
to our larger Self: creative expression, music and rhythm, movement and yoga,
simple rituals, inward visioning, dreaming and more.

The inner and outer are intimately connected. Advances in science are giving us
new maps of the landscape of consciousness as well as a deeper understanding
of the balance of life on our planet. What maps are guiding your life at this time?
We will bring this investigation into our time together.

Come tend to the Soul Garden!

Celebrate the season of change!

Thoughts from Matthew...

It is spring; a time to remember what growth looks like, what it feels like, to remember what happens to what we cultivate through our intentions and practices, and to plant the seeds of change and activation thoughtfully.

It’s a time to celebrate and reawaken the energy of spring (vernal) within and without. It’s a time of growing activity, of uncurling, of reaching, of planting, and increasing heat. In May, many of the seeds will be planted and many sprouts and flowers will be coming up. The nature of a retreat is to step away from the regular rhythm of one’s life, to take time for reflection, and find renewal, sustenance, and inspiration for our next move.

There are dreams and reveries to be shared in the morning. During the day, nature is asking me to wake into the increasing light, heat, and growth. At night, the darkness - perhaps contrasted by a fire in the center - invites me to dance and to trance, and to look at the thresholds between places and states... the liminal states.

What is the general message I’m getting for this retreat? Be in the body, tend to the vessel and strengthen the warrior body so it’s ready for the heat, ready to move easily with the energy of summer that’s to come and the work that needs to be done. Free and clear the mind and heart of the burden of the past and future, of the repetitive negative thoughts and patterns that hold it back. Open the mind/body to the creativity and growth that is the season, the tendrils that reach down into any available nook and cranny and up toward the sky. Free play. Creative problem solving and thinking.

If a movement toward healing comes I will honor it and take the time process it if necessary, but I’m not that interested in a “therapy” retreat where we intentionally crack open the wounds. I’m more interested in accenting the regular and sustained practices (the rhythms that create resonance), which foster long lasting change and evolution.

A dedicated and charismatic educator, Matthew Marsolek is passionate about the play of rhythm, in music and in life, and the healing and community building potential of the expressive arts. His leadership abilities are grounded in over 15 years of experience leading empowerment retreats throughout the Northwest and Canada and numerous events with Drum Brothers world music ensemble [6].

Thoughts from Patrick...

I desire to gather to shed the covering layers of stress, tension, and busyness that we carry, to connect again with the source of our own sustenance and nurturing. With awareness of the power of our intention, we can gather together as a group and create a loving, creative space to be fully – alive, aware, and excited. In community we can also invite gratitude and appreciation as a starting place for new growth. We can also look at houw we see the world, how we respond to each other, and use compassionate communication skills with each other, but also, equally important, within ourselves.

We each bring with us an awareness of our grounded and vibrant connection to what is alive in each of us; through our connection with the earth and with nature, through our bodies, through our senses, through creative movement and expression. I would like to explore ways of seeing each other and being seen as unique, vibrant beings, each with a wealth of skills and knowledge.

I am reminded how much each person’s draw to nature reveals where they are at in their own path and progression. We can use our dynamic engagement with the world to reveal what is beginning to grow and come forth in our lives.

Other questions on my mind… What is spirit? What is creativity and how does it express through us? How do we manifest the changes we envision for ourselves from a balanced, sustainable inner stance? How do we carry these changes back into our daily lives? I look forward to exploring all these thoughts!

Boulder Hot Springs
[8]

This place was named “Peace Valley” by the
First People of this land because they believed that
all people should be able to come here to heal in the
hot mineral waters. It was a place of healing, gathering,
and celebration, giving it a unique history as a place
where hostilities were laid aside. Boulder hot springs
serves home-cooked meals with mostly organic food and
is a smoke-free, alcohol-free environment.
